This letter is written on "The National Education Association of the United States stationary. James congratulates Markham and sending greetings to the Association on his 78th birthday. He read a story about Matrkham is the N.Y. times. Markham's life and philosophy had inspired him to work hard. He has heard about Markaham reading his poem "The Never Old" over the radio. He has told his associates that he had ascribed the poem to James.

California poet. Raised near Vacaville, became a schoolteacher in Coloma and later in Oakland. Became famous overnight with publication of "The Man with a Hoe," his protest against brutalization of labor, in "San Francisco Examiner" (January 15, 1899). Following this success Markham moved to New York where he scored another triumph with "Lincoln and Other Poems" (1901). He became a well-known reader of his own poems and lecturer of idealistic views, but his creative output for remainder of life ...
